Age of Empires Mobile Beginner Guide: 10 Tips to Start

If you just installed Age of Empires Mobile and you’re not sure whether to build your Tavern or your Barracks first, here’s the short version: focus on your Town Center, recruit a hero early, and don’t panic about the slow pace. This Age of Empires Mobile beginner guide covers the stuff that actually matters in your first few days, not a wall of generic tips copied from the desktop games.

Age of Empires Mobile launched globally on iOS and Android on October 17, 2026, built by Xbox Game Studios’ World’s Edge team with Tap4Fun/TiMi handling the mobile build. It’s a real-time strategy game wrapped around idle-style base building, which is a weirder combination than it sounds, and it changes how you should approach the opening hours compared to a normal 4X mobile game.

The basics: what you’re actually managing

Your city runs on four core buildings early on, and the order you upgrade them in sets the pace for everything else.

    • Town Center — this gates almost every other upgrade in your city. Keep it ahead of your other buildings or you’ll hit walls you don’t expect.
    • Tavern — where you recruit heroes. Get this running as soon as possible since heroes carry your early troops.
    • Barracks — trains and upgrades your troops. Don’t ignore this just because heroes feel more exciting.
    • University — your research building. Slower payoff, but the economy and combat bonuses stack up over a week or two.

Quests exist mostly as a disguised tutorial, and that’s fine — follow them for the first few hours, since the rewards speed up your early curve more than almost anything else you can do manually. Special in-game events are also worth checking daily, since they’re one of the better sources of rare heroes and resources outside the main questline.

10 tips before you get serious

    1. Upgrade Town Center first, every time. It unlocks access to higher-tier versions of every other building, so letting it lag behind just creates a bottleneck later.
    2. Get your Tavern up immediately. You want a hero recruiting as early as possible — the sooner you start pulling, the sooner you have someone worth building around.
    3. Learn the three hero types before you pull blindly. Marshals boost troop morale and effectiveness, Warriors are your front-line attackers with high damage output, and Tacticians specialize in weakening the enemy. Running multiples of the same type unlocks a “Strength in Numbers” bonus, so don’t scatter your resources across one of each just to collect them.
    4. Each hero has four skills. A commander skill, a signature skill, and two skills you can customize. Learn what a hero’s signature skill actually does before you decide they’re your long-term pick.
    5. Don’t touch hero talents until level 20. That’s when the talent trees unlock, and resetting a talent build afterward costs 100 Empire coins — not expensive, but annoying enough that it’s worth planning ahead instead of guessing.
    6. Scout your surroundings early. Knowing what resources and threats are near your city changes how you prioritize expansion, and waiting too long to scout just means someone else claims the good spots first.
    7. Build outposts and fortifications along your borders. This matters more once other players are active nearby — an undefended border is basically an invitation.
    8. Spend small speed-ups now, hoard the big ones. Early-game timers are short enough that cheap speed-up items clear them fine. Save your longer speed-ups for when queues get genuinely painful later.
    9. Queue long builds before you log off. The whole point of the idle-style progression is that timers run while you’re not playing, so always leave something cooking before you close the app.
    10. Join an active alliance, not just any alliance. Alliance members help with construction, research, and healing troops, and a genuinely active alliance earns noticeably better rewards than one that’s basically dead. Check activity before you commit.

    Mistakes to avoid

The biggest mistake is treating this like a normal fast-paced mobile strategy game. It isn’t. The pacing is intentionally slow, closer to a long-term base builder than something like a quick-session RTS, so burning all your resources trying to rush is going to leave you stuck later with nothing in reserve. The second mistake is ignoring troop training because hero recruitment feels more rewarding. Heroes boost your troops, they don’t replace them — a strong hero leading a weak, under-leveled army still loses fights it should win.

And don’t dump every resource into one hero’s talents right out of the gate. Wait until level 20, confirm the talent tree actually suits how you’re using that hero, then commit.

    FAQ

Is Age of Empires Mobile pay-to-win?
It has the usual free-to-play mobile monetization — gem purchases, VIP tiers, resource packs — but nothing in the early beginner guide above requires spending. Alliance activity and consistent daily play matter more in the opening weeks than your wallet. [LINK: mobile games without pay to win]

Which hero type should I prioritize first?
There’s no universally “best” pick since it depends on your playstyle, but most new players get more mileage out of leaning into Marshals early for the troop-wide buffs, then filling in Warriors or Tacticians as specific fights demand.

Is it available on iOS and Android?
Yes, it launched globally on both platforms on October 17, 2026.

What’s your Town Center level so far, and which hero type are you leaning into? Drop it in the comments.
