Xbox Game Pass Is Losing Some of Its Best RPGs on May 31 — Here’s What You Need to Play Before They’re Gone

If you’re an Xbox Game Pass subscriber and you haven’t touched your RPG backlog yet, May 31 is about to be a wake-up call. Microsoft is pulling five titles from the service at the end of the month, and this particular wave hits harder than most — especially if you’re a JRPG fan. Two critically acclaimed Atlus games are on the chopping block, and from what we’ve seen in the gaming space over the past few years, losing back-to-back Atlus titles in a single rotation is not a common occurrence. This one stings.

Whether you’ve been meaning to start Metaphor: ReFantazio for the last six months or you’ve had Persona 4 Golden sitting in your library since last summer, the clock is officially ticking. Let’s break down everything that’s leaving, who it affects, and what you should prioritize before the games are gone.

What Xbox Game Pass Is Losing on May 31, 2026

According to reporting from Game Rant, five titles are departing Xbox Game Pass at the end of May. The headliners are undoubtedly the two Atlus entries — Metaphor: ReFantazio and Persona 4 Golden — but the full list also includes Against the Storm, Crypt Custodian, and Spray Paint Simulator.

On paper, five games might not sound catastrophic. But the combined critical weight of this particular departing lineup is exceptional. Metaphor: ReFantazio carries an OpenCritic average of 93, making it one of the highest-rated games to ever appear on the service. Persona 4 Golden sits at 88. Against the Storm, the dark fantasy city builder that’s been quietly delighting strategy fans since December 2023, scores an 89. That’s three games above 88 in a single removal wave — a genuinely unusual situation for any subscription service.

Metaphor: ReFantazio — The One You Really Shouldn’t Miss

Metaphor: ReFantazio launched in May 2025 on Game Pass as a day-one release, which was a massive deal at the time. Atlus’s fantasy JRPG — drawing on the social link systems that made the Persona series famous while building an entirely new world around them — turned out to be one of the best games of 2024 when it originally released on other platforms. A year into its Game Pass stint, it’s leaving on May 31.

The time commitment here is real. A standard playthrough runs roughly 65 to 109 hours depending on how thoroughly you engage with the story and side content. Finishing it before the end of the month is a tall order for anyone with a full-time life. But even putting in 10 or 15 hours to see what the game is about before it’s gone is worth your time. Dr Gamez has covered Atlus’s output extensively over the years, and Metaphor represents the studio operating at its creative peak — don’t let it slip by untouched.

Persona 4 Golden — A Legend, But Its Time Is Up (Again)

Persona 4 Golden has had a strange relationship with Xbox Game Pass. It originally joined the service in January 2023, left in January 2024, returned in August 2025, and is now set to depart again at the end of May 2026 — just nine months into its second stint. This is notably shorter than its first run, and it won’t make it to a full year this time around.

The good news, if there is any, is that subscribers aren’t losing access to the Persona 4 universe entirely. Persona 4 Revival, a full remake of the iconic JRPG, has already been confirmed as a day-one Xbox Game Pass release. It was announced at the June 2025 Xbox Games Showcase, and with another showcase scheduled for June 7, 2026, a release window could be just weeks away. Still, that’s a future promise, and the enhanced edition leaving now is a present loss.

The Rest of the May 31 Departures — Don’t Sleep on These Either

The Atlus titles are grabbing all the attention, but the other three departing games deserve a mention.

Against the Storm is the sleeper casualty of this wave. The dark fantasy city-builder has been on Game Pass since December 2023 — nearly two and a half years — and it’s quietly one of the most replayable strategy games on the service. Its roguelite structure means no two runs play out the same way, and if you’ve been looking for something to fill that Hades-meets-city-builder niche in your library, this is it. At an 89 on OpenCritic, it’s leaving with a stronger critical reputation than most games that ever make it onto the service at all.

Crypt Custodian, the colorful afterlife Metroidvania, is a shorter commitment at around 9 to 13 hours — and it’s leaving just three days before its first anniversary on the platform. If you’re an achievement hunter, this and Spray Paint Simulator are your best bets for completion before the deadline. Both are compact enough to finish well within the remaining window.

A Quick Priority Guide for What’s Left

If you have limited time before May 31, here’s how we’d rank your priorities based on critical quality and replaceability. Metaphor: ReFantazio is the most urgent — it has no substitute on the service and no confirmed re-addition on the horizon. Against the Storm follows closely, given its extraordinary depth for a subscription library title. Persona 4 Golden is valuable, but its eventual spiritual successor on Game Pass softens the blow slightly. Crypt Custodian is a great afternoon experience worth grabbing if you have the time, and Spray Paint Simulator, while niche, is a solid completion target for trophy chasers.

What’s Coming to Game Pass at the End of May

The departures don’t happen in a vacuum, and Microsoft is adding new titles to soften the blow. In the final stretch of May, subscribers can look forward to Escape Simulator arriving on May 26, followed by Echo Generation 2 and The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition on May 27. The month closes out with two day-one releases on May 28: bug-collecting game Kabuto Park and party driving title Crashout Crew.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition is a worthwhile pickup for anyone who missed Obsidian’s RPG the first time around — it’s not a Metaphor-level event, but it’s a solid RPG in its own right and a reasonable trade-off in the rotation. That said, no amount of incoming titles fully replaces two Atlus masterworks leaving in the same week.

Why This Departure Wave Matters More Than Most

Subscription gaming has normalized the concept of games coming and going, and most monthly rotations pass without much commentary. But this one is different, and it’s worth framing why. The pattern we’ve seen play out repeatedly — critically acclaimed games joining Game Pass for a limited window before rotating off — is something Dr Gamez has been tracking closely over the past few years.

The closest historical parallel is the wave from early 2024, when Microsoft pulled Persona 4 Golden the first time alongside several other well-regarded titles, prompting widespread subscriber frustration. That departure arguably made the August 2025 return feel like a victory. Now, nine months later, history is repeating — and the lesson for subscribers is the same as it was then: don’t assume a game will be there when you’re finally ready for it.

The real cost of catalog subscriptions isn’t the monthly fee — it’s the opportunity cost of games you meant to play and missed. From what we’ve seen in the broader conversation around Game Pass over the years, the titles that hurt the most when they leave are always the ones people intended to start “next week.”

Conclusion: Clock Is Ticking on Xbox Game Pass’s Best RPG Lineup in Years

The Xbox Game Pass May 2026 departure wave is one of the most impactful removals the service has seen in recent memory. Losing Metaphor: ReFantazio, Persona 4 Golden, and Against the Storm in a single rotation isn’t just a statistical blip — it’s the erasure of hundreds of hours of top-tier gaming content from a catalog that needed those titles. If you’re a subscriber, you have until May 31 to get started, and that window is closing fast.

The silver lining is that Persona 4 Revival is already confirmed as a future day-one addition, so the Atlus relationship with Xbox Game Pass isn’t over — it’s just pausing. And with the June 2026 Xbox showcase on the horizon, that wait might not be long.

But Metaphor: ReFantazio has no such safety net. Once it’s gone, it’s gone — at least for now.
