Project Windless: A Three-Meter Warrior Chicken Takes the Stage
At PlayStation’s State of Play showcase, one of the most talked-about titles was undoubtedly Project Windless. The reason? A truly unconventional hero: a three-meter-tall warrior chicken named Rekon. Developed by Krafton Montreal as an open-world RPG, the game is set in the universe of Korean author Yeongdo Lee’s acclaimed fantasy series The Bird That Drinks Tears. From its very first reveal, it made clear that it aims to break traditional RPG molds.
Why a Giant Chicken?
According to the developers, this choice was entirely intentional. Creative director Patrik Méthé explained that they wanted players to feel hooked before the trailer even reached its halfway point. The shock factor worked perfectly, as Rekon quickly became a trending topic across social media.
The Hero Design Process
At the start of development, the team explored four different character concepts:
- A human warrior
- A fire-breathing Tokkebi
- An immortal reptilian race called Nhaga
- And the giant warrior chicken, Rekon
Concept art was even shown during recruitment interviews, and Méthé noted that Rekon was the character that stuck in everyone’s mind. Some candidates who didn’t join the project still expressed their desire to play as Rekon.
What Does It Mean for Gameplay?
Choosing Rekon raises intriguing questions:
- What will it feel like to control a giant chicken in combat?
- How deep will character customization go?
- Will romance options be included?
For now, Méthé remains cautious, saying it’s “too early” to discuss such details.
Release Date and Expectations
No official release date has been announced yet. However, with its bold reveal, Project Windless has already established a strong identity. By introducing Rekon as its hero, the game has successfully captured attention and promises to deliver a fresh take on the fantasy RPG genre.
