Air Shooter Combat: Our First Mobile Game and What We Learned Building It

At Dr Gamez, we believe that the best games come from genuine passion rather than market research and focus groups. Air Shooter Combat is the clearest proof of that belief. It is our debut mobile title, a retro-inspired aerial combat game built from scratch over five months — and it represents everything we stand for as an independent studio.

    What Is Air Shooter Combat?

Air Shooter Combat is a mobile action game available on the Google Play Store. At its core, it is a love letter to the golden age of arcade flight games — the era of pixelated jets, relentless enemy waves, and the pure satisfaction of clearing the screen with a well-timed volley of bullets.

The game puts you in the cockpit of a fighter jet, tasked with surviving increasingly intense waves of enemy aircraft. Controls are designed to be immediately intuitive for new players while offering enough depth to reward those who invest time in mastering the mechanics. Pick it up and you are in the air within seconds. That accessibility was a core design priority from day one.

    The Inspiration Behind the Game

The concept for Air Shooter Combat came from a simple question: what made classic aerial combat games so endlessly replayable? Games from the arcade era did not rely on complex storylines or cinematic cutscenes. They relied on tight mechanics, satisfying feedback, and the constant push to beat your own score.

Modern mobile gaming has largely moved away from that philosophy, chasing monetization models and social features that often come at the expense of pure gameplay. Air Shooter Combat was our attempt to push back against that trend — to build something that respects the player’s time and intelligence while delivering a genuinely fun experience.

How We Built It: Five Months in Unity

Air Shooter Combat was developed entirely in-house by Tonay Doruk, founder of Dr Gamez, using Unity and C#. The development process took five months from initial concept to Play Store launch — a timeline that required discipline, creative problem-solving, and more than a few late nights.

The early weeks were spent prototyping the core flight and shooting mechanics. Getting the feel of the controls right was the highest priority. On mobile, where you are working with a touchscreen rather than physical buttons, the margin for error is narrow. Too sensitive and the game feels uncontrollable. Too sluggish and it loses the arcade energy that defines the genre.

Once the core mechanics felt solid, attention shifted to enemy design and level structure. The goal was to create enemy patterns that felt challenging without becoming frustrating — a balance that classic arcade games mastered and that remains genuinely difficult to achieve.

The visual design draws directly from retro aesthetics. Rather than chasing photorealism, we leaned into a style that feels deliberately nostalgic — clean sprites, vibrant colors, and visual effects that prioritize clarity and impact over complexity. When an enemy goes down, you know it immediately.

Sound design followed the same philosophy. Every shot, every explosion, every near-miss is accompanied by audio feedback that reinforces the action on screen. In a genre built on rhythm and reaction, sound is not decoration — it is part of the gameplay.

    Mechanics and Features

Wave-Based Combat Air Shooter Combat is structured around progressive waves of enemy aircraft. Each wave introduces new enemy types, movement patterns, and attack behaviors. The difficulty curve is designed to feel fair — early waves let you find your footing, while later stages demand quick thinking and precise movement.

Responsive Touch Controls The control scheme was designed specifically for mobile play. Your jet responds immediately to your input, giving you full control over positioning while keeping the interface clean and uncluttered. No virtual joysticks, no complicated button layouts — just direct, responsive control.

Retro Visual Design Every visual element in Air Shooter Combat was crafted to evoke the classic arcade era. From the enemy sprite designs to the background scrolling effects, the game wears its influences openly and proudly. If you grew up playing classic shoot-em-ups, Air Shooter Combat will feel like coming home.

Progressive Challenge The game is designed to be easy to start and genuinely difficult to master. Casual players can enjoy the early waves and the satisfaction of improving their performance. More competitive players will find real challenge in pushing deeper into the game and climbing the difficulty curve.

    Our First 210 Players

Since launching on the Google Play Store, Air Shooter Combat has been downloaded 210 times. For a first game from an independent studio with no marketing budget and no established audience, every single one of those downloads represents a real person who chose to spend their time with something we made — and that means a great deal to us.

We have been watching the feedback carefully. The response from players who have engaged with the game has reinforced our belief in the core concept while also giving us valuable insight into areas we can improve. That feedback loop is exactly what we hoped for when we launched.

Building an audience as an independent developer takes time. We are not chasing viral moments or overnight success. We are focused on making good games, treating our players with respect, and growing steadily through quality and consistency.

    What We Learned

Five months of solo development teaches you things that no tutorial can. A few of the most important lessons from building Air Shooter Combat:

Scope discipline is everything. The original concept for Air Shooter Combat was larger than what shipped. Learning to identify which features were essential to the experience and which were distractions was one of the most valuable skills the project developed.

Polish matters more than features. A game with ten mechanics that feel great will always beat a game with twenty mechanics that feel rough. We cut features to spend more time on the ones that remained — and the game is better for it.

Mobile has its own design language. Assumptions that work in PC or console game design do not always translate to mobile. Understanding the specific constraints and opportunities of the platform — session length, control input, screen real estate — shaped every decision we made.

    Play Air Shooter Combat

Air Shooter Combat is available now on the Google Play Store, completely free to download. If you enjoy retro-inspired action games and want to support an independent studio that is genuinely passionate about the games it makes, we would love to have you on board.

Every download, every rating, and every piece of feedback helps us grow and improve. Air Shooter Combat is just the beginning of what Dr Gamez has planned — and your support makes everything that comes next possible.
